Countingup, the business banking, accounting and tax app that has helped more than 100,000 small businesses manage their finances, now offers business bank accounts through a new partnership with Griffin.

This move comes at a time when small business owners face increasing pressure to stay on top of their finances and tax obligations. With Making Tax Digital for VAT already in force and further reporting changes rolling out for sole traders, business owners are being asked to manage more financial administration than ever before.

Yet many small businesses still rely on fragmented systems to manage their finances. Research commissioned by Countingup found that 78% of small business owners are interested in a service that combines banking, accounting and tax support in one place, while 48% don’t find filing and paying taxes easy.

The findings highlight how the role of business banking is evolving. Rather than just needing somewhere to store and send money, small businesses now expect financial providers to help them manage bookkeeping, tax and compliance alongside their day-to-day banking needs.

By moving from e-money accounts to business bank accounts, Countingup can offer customers additional protections and banking capabilities, while continuing to provide AI-powered accounting and tax tools built into the app. Customers will benefit from a number of new features, including government-backed FSCS protection on eligible deposits up to £120,000, faster and more reliable payments, Open Banking compatibility that allows them to connect third-party apps and make payments through Open Banking, and 1.2% AER (variable) interest on savings held in a Tax Pot.

The new business bank accounts are now available to new customers, with existing customers being upgraded over time.

Tom Platt, CEO of Countingup, said: “For too long, small businesses have been expected to piece together their financial admin themselves‍—‌a business account from one provider, accounting software from another and often a back-and-forth with their accountant to pull everything together.

At the same time, reporting requirements are increasing and financial admin is becoming more complex. Small businesses don’t need more to manage‍—‌they need fewer systems that work better together and a clearer picture of their finances in one place.

Strengthening the banking side of our proposition is an important step in that journey. It allows us to offer customers the protection and functionality they expect from a business bank account, while continuing to build the accounting and tax tools that help them stay organised, prepare for tax and work more effectively with their accountant.”

To support the next phase of its growth, Countingup has partnered with Griffin, a fully licensed UK bank. Griffin provides the regulated banking infrastructure and compliance framework behind the accounts, helping bring additional protections and banking capabilities to Countingup customers. The partnership strengthens Countingup’s proposition and creates a platform for future product development, combining Griffin’s regulated banking infrastructure with Countingup’s technology and expertise.

Griffin’s CEO, David Jarvis, adds: “Countingup has built something genuinely useful‍—‌streamlining accounting, taxes and money management for small businesses. We’re proud to support their next phase of growth, providing the banking infrastructure needed to deliver business bank accounts directly to their customers.”

As part of the upgrade to further strengthen its all-in-one business banking proposition, Countingup has also joined Mastercard’s Business Bonus Programme. This means eligible customers can access Mastercard Business Bonus, a programme of discounts and offers designed to help small businesses save on the tools and services they use to run and grow their business.

This launch marks an important milestone in Countingup’s mission to simplify financial management for small businesses. Having helped more than 100,000 business owners across the UK manage their finances, the company was recently named a finalist for Best Business Banking Provider at the British Bank Awards for the second consecutive year.

The partnerships with Griffin and Mastercard provide a strong foundation for the next phase of growth, as Countingup continues to invest in products that help small businesses spend less time on financial admin and more time running their business.
