What information do I need to provide to someone trying to pay me?
You or your customers will need to provide the payer with:
- The legal name of the account owner
- Sort code
- Account number
- Account type (business or personal)
The legal name of the account owner may be:
- Individual. The full legal name of the account owner. We only ever confirm the verified legal name we hold, so nicknames won't match.
- Business. The legal business name as registered with Companies House. Trading names won't match.
- Sole trader. The full, personal legal name of the sole trader—not their trading name. Sole trader accounts count as business accounts for CoP, so payers should select "business" if asked for the account type.
Some accounts also need a secondary reference, like a building society roll number. For more detail, check out our Confirmation of Payee guide.
