What is Confirmation of Payee?
Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is a name checking service that helps prevent UK domestic payments being sent to the wrong account. When someone sets up a new payee, the details they provide are checked against the records held by the payee's bank.
There are three possible results that will be displayed to the sender:
- Match. The details provided match the payee's account.
- Close match. The details are close, but not quite right—the sender will be shown a suggested correction.
- No match. The details don't match, or the account couldn't be checked.
CoP works in both directions: we run checks when you set up a payee, and we respond to checks from other banks when someone sets up a payment to a Griffin account.
