Who do we need to submit a tax identification number (TIN) for?
UK Tax Residents
A UK TIN is not required for individuals, sole traders, directors or PSCs. The one exception is sole traders with annual turnover over £90,000, who must provide a TIN.
Non-UK Tax Residents
Whether a TIN is required depends on the country of tax residency. Countries fall into three categories.
TIN required—A TIN must always be provided for individuals and PSCs with tax residency in these countries. This includes the United States—US citizens must provide a US TIN regardless of where they are resident.
TIN required unless exempt—A TIN must be provided for tax residents of these countries. If the individual or PSC genuinely does not have a TIN, a valid reason code must be submitted in place of one. Not having a TIN to hand is not sufficient grounds.
TIN not required—No TIN or reason code is needed for individuals or PSCs with tax residency in these countries.
For details on specific countries please see TIN by country requirements.
